I substitute teach, and I am loved by students. I see some of these kids struggling to read at much lower grade levels than what match their ages. I don't want them to fall through the cracks, and I know I can help them. First, what we do is make sure there are no learning disabilities that can hinder progress when not addressed. We then start reading materials that are not too troubling for the student to build up their language and confidence. I teach my student how to read at the most basic level that he or she needs. I read out loud while my student follows along, mouthing the words to get a feel for the individual movements of each letter.
